Fish Oil Improves Memory, Reduces Diabetes and Heart Disease Risk Factors


 

 

 

FISH OIL IMPROVES MEMORY, REDUCES DIABETES AND HEART DISEASE RISK FACTORS

Fish oil, which is rich in anti-inflammatory omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids, can play an important role in maintaining cardiovascular health.  There is also research data available to suggest that regular supplements of fish oil may improve brain function, including memory, in older patients.  Now, a recently published research paper, which appears in the Nutrition Journal, provides strong evidence that fish oil supplements can indeed improve cognitive function, while simultaneously reducing risk factors for cardiovascular disease.

In this study, 40 healthy middle-aged and elderly research volunteers underwent initial evaluation, including blood tests and cognitive function testing.  In this “placebo-controlled crossover” study, the volunteers were randomly divided into two groups.  One group received 3 grams of fish oil per day, while the other group received a placebo (sugar) pill.  After 5 weeks, the two groups of research volunteers were retested, and were then switched, or “crossed over,” with respect to the fish oil supplements and placebo pills.  After 5 additional weeks, the research volunteers were all once again retested.

Retesting of these research volunteers showed a significant improvement in memory function after taking fish oil for 5 weeks (when compared to the volunteers who were taking placebo pills).  Moreover, fish oil supplementation was also associated with a lower level of fat (triglycerides) in the blood, lower blood pressure, lower blood sugar levels, and a decrease in the level of the inflammatory protein TNF-alpha (tumor necrosis factor-alpha).

Taken together, the findings of this clinical study identified several apparent health benefits associated with daily fish oil supplements in middle-aged and elderly research volunteers, including improved memory function and improvements in multiple known risk factors for cardiovascular disease and diabetes.

Acts of Kindness Improve Social Acceptance Among Pre-Teens



A new study confirms that acts of kindness improve happiness and social acceptance among pre-teens.


 

ACTS OF KINDNESS IMPROVE SOCIAL ACCEPTANCE AMONG PRE-TEENS

Some have observed that “nice guys finish last,” and, indeed, there is some data to suggest that, in the corporate world at least, the arrogant are, ironically, often viewed as more motivated, more goal-oriented, and more deserving of advancement when compared to their less aggressive peers.  However, most of us would like to believe that a kind and caring heart will be rewarded in life, and rewarded by others.  But, is there any objective evidence that kindness really does beget happiness and kindness?  According to a newly published clinical study from Canada, kindness really does appear to increase our personal sense of well-being, as well as increasing the likelihood that others will regard us kindly in return.  Moreover, the social benefits of being kind towards others appear to begin relatively early in life, as this newly published study in the journal PLOS ONE reveals.

For teenagers, and for those on the cusp of adolescence, being accepted and being liked by one’s peers is of the utmost importance.  Indeed, young people who feel excluded from social groups at school often end up feeling like outcasts, and may suffer considerable long term injury to their self-confidence and self-esteem.  In this newly published clinical study, 415 children between the ages of 9 and 11 years volunteered to participate in this study for a period of 4 weeks.  These young volunteers were randomly assigned either to perform 3 acts of kindness or, instead, to visit 3 places on a weekly basis.  At the end of week, each student was asked to report on their activities during the previous week.  

At the end of this 4-week study, both groups of students experienced measurable improvements in their sense of well-being.  However, the students who were assigned to complete 3 acts of kindness per week experienced a significantly greater improvement in acceptance and approval by their student peers (based upon confidential classroom surveys) when compared to the student volunteers who had been randomized to visit 3 places per week.

The authors note in their conclusion that, based upon the findings of this study, “doing good” for others benefits not only the recipients of kind acts, but also the person who is performing the kind acts as well.  Furthermore, in view of the importance of being accepted by one’s peers, and of being happy, during the pre-teen and teenage years of our lives, the finding that simple acts of kindness increase both acceptance by social peers and internal happiness are very important findings, indeed.  Other important findings from this study include the observation that children who are well-accepted by their peers are more inclusive in their actions towards others, and are less likely to engage in exclusionary behaviors towards others, including bullying (or worse…).  At the classroom level, the authors of this study also note that the absence of both favored and marginalized children is associated with improved overall classroom mental health.  Based upon the findings of this intriguing study of pre-teen children, the authors suggest that teachers and parents should strive to introduce a culture of regular “acts of kindness” and inclusion within classrooms, which sounds like a very good idea to me.

Speaking Two Languages Improves Brain Function Late in Life



A new study shows that speaking at least two languages improves brain function later in life.


 

 

 

SPEAKING TWO LANGUAGES IMPROVES BRAIN FUNCTION LATE IN LIFE

Although there are an estimated 6,000 distinct languages spoken on the planet, only about 1 in 4 countries officially identify themselves as bilingual or multilingual nations.  However, there are more people in the world who speak at least two languages than there are people who speak only one language.  Therefore, the majority of humankind can be thought of as generally being bilingual or multilingual.

Based upon previously published cognitive studies, being bilingual or multilingual appears to “strengthen” the areas of the brain that are involved in both language processing and other higher cognitive functions.  Indeed, based upon these prior studies, lifelong multilingual people appear to experience a later onset of cognitive decline in life, and a lower incidence of Alzheimer’s disease, compared to monolingual people.  Now, a newly published research study, which appears in the Journal of Neuroscience, provides fascinating new insights into exactly how bilingualism and multilingualism may help to preserve cognitive function in the brain as we age.

In this study, 110 older monolingual and bilingual adults participated in several “task-switching” exercises that test cognitive function.  Using a sophisticated imaging system that measures blood flow within specific areas of the brain (functional magnetic resonance imaging, or fMRI), these monolingual and bilingual study volunteers were put through their paces with various task-switching exercises while their brain function was monitored by fMRI.

Among the monolingual older adults, areas of the brain associated with the processing of information, and with decision-making, were highly activated during task-switching exercises, indicating that these areas of the brain were working very hard to complete the tasks assigned by the researchers.  The bilingual older adults also experienced increased activity in the left lateral frontal cortex and cingulate cortex, but significantly less so than the monolingual study volunteers.  At the same time, the bilingual volunteers consistently outperformed their monolingual fellow volunteers on the task-switching exercises, despite lower levels of activation of these two key areas of the brain.  Thus, just as has been predicted by previous cognitive testing studies, lifelong bilingualism does indeed appear to increase the efficiency of the areas of the brain that are involved in high-level cognitive processing, and also appear to decrease the rate of loss of these cognitive abilities with advancing age, when compared to monolingualism.  In this clinical study, the bilingual older adults were more successful in completing task-switching cognitive exercises than monolingual older adults; and at the same time, the brains of the bilingual adults accomplished this improved cognitive performance with less effort than their monolingual counterparts (based upon fMRI measurements of brain activity).

While there are many potential personal, professional, social and cultural benefits to speaking more than one language, this elegant clinical research study confirms earlier predictions that lifelong bilingualism and multilingualism may help to preserve the cognitive efficiency and function of the higher processing centers of the brain much later in life.  Given at least the perception that the United States lags behind many other countries in the world in the area of foreign language education, the findings of this new study offer yet another reason for schools in the US to ramp up their foreign language programs.  We live in an increasingly competitive, globalized and multilingual world, and preparing our children for a successful future in that world should include early and continuous exposure to foreign language training, in my view.

Resveratrol May Reduce Cancer Risk and Cancer Cell Growth



 

A new study suggests that resveratrol may reduce cancer risk and cancer progression.



 

 

 

RESVERATROL MAY REDUCE CANCER RISK AND CANCER CELL GROWTH

As I discuss in my bestselling book, A Cancer Prevention Guide for the Human Race, resveratrol, a plant-derived phenol, has been found, in laboratory studies, to potentially reduce the risk of both cardiovascular disease and cancer, and may increase longevity as well (at least in laboratory animals…).

Resveratrol’s anti-cancer effects have been observed in multiple laboratory studies using cancer cells grown in culture and in laboratory animals.  (Unfortunately, there is very little clinical data available regarding the effects of resveratrol in humans.) However, the precise mechanisms whereby resveratrol may inhibit the development and growth of cancer cells remain unclear at this time.  Now, a newly published study, which appears in the journal Cancer Prevention Research, sheds some important scientific light on at least one mechanism whereby resveratrol may inhibit cancer cell development and growth.

In this two-part laboratory study, resveratrol was found to increase the production of the enzyme SIRT1, which appears to play an important role in suppressing cancer cell growth and survival.

In the first part of this study, human prostate cancer cells were exposed to resveratrol, which resulted in an increase in the production of SIRT1, and an associated decrease in tumor cell growth and survival.

In the second part of this study, a strain of mice predisposed to developing prostate cancer had their food supplemented with resveratrol.  When compared to similar mice that did not receive resveratrol supplements, exposure to dietary resveratrol resulted in a significant decrease in prostate gland size, and, more importantly, a significant reduction (54%) in precancerous changes (high-grade prostatic intraepithelial neoplasia, or HGPIN) within the prostate gland.  When the prostate glands of the resveratrol-supplemented mice were tested, increased levels of the SIRT1 enzyme were also confirmed.

This study showed that resveratrol increases SIRT1 levels, which may, in turn, reduce the development of precancerous changes that can lead to the development of prostate cancer (and, potentially, other types of cancer as well).  This study also showed that resveratrol may also be able to reduce the growth and survival of human prostate cancer cells.

There are a couple of very important caveats to mention with regards to this study.  First of all, as I have repeatedly noted before, what works on cancer cells growing in a laboratory dish, or in genetically altered laboratory animals, often fails to work on human beings.  Secondly, there is no long-term clinical data looking at the effects (either good or bad) of resveratrol supplementation in humans.  Finally, resveratrol is poorly absorbed in humans, and relatively high (and frequent) oral intake of this compound is required to achieve blood levels comparable to those concentrations used in most laboratory studies. Fortunately, at this time there are approximately a dozen human research studies underway that are assessing the impact of resveratrol supplementation on cancer risk and cancer-associated survival.  Hopefully, some of these ongoing clinical studies will shed additional important scientific light on the potential of resveratrol to prevent and treat cancer in humans, although the findings of these studies are still years away.
