Nuts Increase Health & Lifespan



A new study finds that nuts decrease the risk of cancer, heart disease and lung disease, and increase lifespan.


 

NUTS INCREASE HEALTH AND LIFESPAN

As I discuss in my book, A Cancer Prevention Guide for the Human Race, the so-called Mediterranean diet, which includes the regular consumption of tree nuts, has been associated with a significant decrease in the risk of cancer, heart disease, diabetes and other serious illnesses in several clinical studies.  Now, a very large and ongoing public health study adds further compelling evidence about the potential health benefits of nuts.  The results of this study are published in the current issue of the New England Journal of Medicine.

This study includes the combined findings of two very large ongoing prospective clinically research trials, the Nurses’ Health Study and the Health Professionals Follow-up Study.  The first study includes 121,700 female nurses who have been followed since the study opened in 1976.  The second study includes 51,529 male health professionals who have been followed since 1986.  Detailed dietary surveys were administered to the volunteers in these two studies every 2 to 4 years.

When compared to study volunteers who did not eat nuts, volunteers who ate nuts 7 or more times per week had a 20 percent lower death rate.  More specifically, increasing nut intake was associated with a significant decrease in death due to heart disease, respiratory illnesses, and cancer.  Both tree nuts (e.g., almonds, walnuts, pecans, hazelnuts, etc.) and peanuts appeared to significantly reduce the risk of death due to major chronic illnesses.

The combined findings of these two very large ongoing prospective public health studies are consistent with the findings of other large studies that have linked the regular consumption of nuts with a decreased risk of chronic major illnesses, and an increased lifespan.

Exercise Versus Drugs for Heart Disease, Stroke and Diabetes



A new study shows that exercise is at least as effective as drugs in reducing death rates from heart disease, stroke and diabetes.


 

EXERCISE VERSUS DRUGS FOR HEART DISEASE, STROKE AND DIABETES

Coronary artery disease, stroke and diabetes are among the most common causes of disability and death in modern society.  In recent years, scientific advances have brought forth many new medications that can help to prevent and manage these life-threatening diseases, and prolong life.  But what if I was to tell you that there is a natural, medication-free, low-risk treatment that can reduce your risk of dying from these diseases, as well as dying from cancer?  What if I also told you that this treatment reduces stress, and can help to ease anxiety and depression?  Would you be interested in a free, nontoxic therapy that could do all of these miraculous things, and which did not require the use of any pills, injections or surgery?  Well, there is such a therapy, and that therapy is… exercise!

A newly published research study strongly suggests that plain old exercise appears to be as effective as medications in reducing death rates associated with heart disease, stroke and diabetes.  This research study appears in the British Medical Journal.

In this meta-analysis study, a whopping 305 prospective randomized clinical research trials, encompassing 339,274 study participants, were evaluated.  Among these more than 300,000 study participants, nearly 15,000 were assigned to undergo exercise as an intervention to prevent or treat coronary artery disease, stroke and diabetes.  The findings of this meta-analysis revealed just how effective increasing physical activity levels can be in improving your health and prolonging your life with regards to coronary artery disease, stroke and diabetes.  In fact, exercise was actually more effective than medications in preventing death in patients who were undergoing rehabilitation following stroke.  When comparing exercise to medications, exercise was as effective as drugs in the prevention of coronary artery disease and diabetes, as well as in reducing the risk of death due to these diseases.

As I document in my book, A Cancer Prevention Guide for the Human Race, there is extensive high-level research data available showing that regular and moderate exercise can dramatically reduce your risk of dying from cancer.  This newly published research study further confirms the very significant and broad health benefits of staying physically active.  While this particular study cannot tell us if it is safe to switch from medications to exercise alone in the management of chronic diseases, it does confirms the findings of earlier studies showing that exercise can be highly effective in preventing or controlling serious chronic illnesses like heart disease, stroke, diabetes and cancer.  So, please don’t delay in starting this “miracle therapy” called exercise!

Fruit and Diabetes Risk



New research finds that some fruits reduce diabetes risk, while other fruits have no impact on diabetes risk (and fruit juice increases diabetes risk).


 

FRUIT AND DIABETES RISK

Diabetes has become a significant public health problem in the United States, and around the world, in recent years as obesity rates have continued to climb.  According to the American Diabetes Association, nearly 26 million Americans (8 percent of the population) have diabetes.  Diabetes is a prolific cause of serious illnesses, including heart disease, high blood pressure, stroke, blindness, kidney failure, neuropathy, and limb loss.  Diabetes causes, or contributes to, more than 230,000 deaths in the United States each year.

We all know that fresh fruits and vegetables are an important part of a healthy diet, and have consistently been linked with a reduced risk of cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and cancer (for more details on the links between diet and cancer, see my book, A Cancer Prevention Guide for the Human Race).  But new research suggests that not all forms of fruit are created equal when it comes to maintaining an optimal level of health, including the prevention of diabetes.  This new research study appears in the current issue of the British Medical Journal.

The ongoing Nurses’ Health Study and the Nurses’ Health Study II are huge prospective public health studies that, together, involve more than 150,000 female nurse volunteers, while the prospective Health Professionals Follow-up Study includes more than 36,000 male physicians.  The primary outcome evaluated by this particular public health study was the risk of diabetes associated with fruit intake.

During the long course of this enormous public health study, 12,198 study participants went on to develop diabetes.  After adjusting for other known diabetes risk factors among these more than 185,000 research volunteers, the regular consumption of blueberries, grapes, raisins, apples, and pears was associated with a significant reduction in the risk of developing diabetes.  On the other hand, the consumption of bananas, grapefruit, peaches, plums, apricots, oranges, strawberries, and cantaloupe did not reduce diabetes risk.  At the same time, the consumption of fruit juices, which often contain significant added sugar, was associated with a small but significant increase in diabetes risk.

In summary, the findings of this important public health study indicate that the risk of diabetes appears to be reduced with the consumption of at least 3 servings per week of blueberries, grapes, raisins, apples, and/or pears, while the regular consumption of other common fruits had no apparent impact on diabetes risk.  However, fruit juice consumption was associated with an increase in diabetes risk.

Why We Eat Far More Calories than We Think



A new study shows that we greatly underestimate how many calories we consume.


 

WHY WE EAT FAR MORE CALORIES THAN WE THINK

As I discuss in my bestselling book, A Cancer Prevention Guide for the Human Race, it is critically important to avoid diets and foods, and other lifestyle choices, known to increase the risk of cancer.  As I also discuss in my book, the human body was not designed for the supra-normal calorie content of the typical “western diet.”  The enormous number of calories packed into the highly processed foods that most people favor, when combined with our increasingly sedentary lifestyle, has led to an epidemic of obesity and obesity-related diseases, including cancer, diabetes, high blood pressure, heart disease, stroke, gallstones, liver disease, and accelerated arthritis, among other preventable serious illnesses.  Another point that I make in my book, and in discussions with my patients, is that almost all of us greatly underestimate the number of calories that we are consuming while, at the same time, we tend to overestimate the number of calories that we are burning through physical activity.

A newly published public health study, which appears in the current issue of the British Medical Journal, provides compelling data regarding our predisposition towards underestimating just how many calories we consume on a daily basis.

In this study, 1,877 adults, 1,178 adolescents, and 330 school-age children were asked to estimate the approximate number of calories that they were consuming while eating at fast food restaurants.  Specifically, these surveys were performed at McDonalds, Burger King, Subway, Wendy’s, KFC, and Dunkin’ Donuts.

The actual calories count, on average, for each meal was 836 calories for adults, 756 calories for adolescents, and 733 calories for children.  When asked to estimate the numbers of the calories they had just consumed, the adults underestimated their caloric intake by an average of 175 calories, the adolescents by 259 calories, and the school-age children by 175 calories.  Perhaps more important was the observation that the degree of underestimation of calorie content of fast-food meals actually increased with increasing actual meal calorie counts.  That is to say, the more excessive calories that people consumed at these fast-food restaurants, the more they underestimated their actual caloric intake.  Another interesting finding of this public health study was that adults and teens who ate at Subway underestimated the calorie counts of their meals to a greater degree (20 and 25 percent, respectively) than people who ate at McDonald’s, suggesting an inaccurate perception that Subway meals contained fewer calories (and were, therefore, healthier) than McDonalds meals.

High Fat Diet Decreases Metabolism and Increases Anger and Hostility



A new study finds that saturated fat decreases metabolism and physical activity, and increases anger and hostility.


 

HIGH FAT DIET DECREASES METABOLISM AND INCREASES ANGER AND HOSTILITY

As I have written about extensively in my bestselling book, A Cancer Prevention Guide for the Human Race, a diet low in saturated fat and meat products, such as the Mediterranean diet, has been linked to a decreased risk of cancer (and cardiovascular disease) when compared to the traditional Western diet, which is rich in saturated fat and meat. Now, a new study has linked a Mediterranean-type diet, low in saturated fat, to other potential health benefits, including greater levels of physical activity, a higher metabolic rate, and, somewhat surprisingly, less angry and hostile moods. This study appears in the current issue of the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition.

In this prospective randomized clinical study, 32 young adults were separated into two groups. The first group used cooking oils high in saturated fat, while the second group used cooking oils low in saturated fat and high in monounsaturated fat. After three weeks, both groups were “crossed over,” and had their cooking oils switched for an additional three weeks. (This clinical study’s “crossover” design is a powerful means of eliminating potential biases that can lead to false conclusions.) Another important aspect of this study was that all food consumed by the study’s volunteer research subjects was provided (and controlled) by the researchers. Moreover, the food provided to both groups of study volunteers was the same, and only the cooking oil differed between the two study groups.

All research volunteers were continuously assessed with regards to physical activity levels and resting metabolic rates (“resting energy expenditure”). Due to the observed differences in physical activity levels between the two groups of volunteers, the researchers also subjected study volunteers to a validated mood assessment questionnaire, to see if differences in mood might account for the significantly different levels of physical activity between the two groups of research volunteers.

The results of this intriguing prospective randomized clinical study were quite interesting. Firstly, continuous measurements of physical activity showed that the monounsaturated oil (Mediterranean-like diet) group was 12 percent more active, physically, than the saturated fat group (Western-type diet). Secondly, the resting metabolic rate of the monounsaturated oil group was almost 5 percent higher than that of the saturated fat cooking oil group, suggesting that the young adults who were consuming primarily monounsaturated fat were burning more calories at rest than the group that was using saturated fat. Finally, the monounsaturated fat group scored significantly lower on the anger-hostility scale of the mood assessment questionnaire than the volunteers who were using cooking oil containing saturated fat.

To summarize, this innovative prospective clinical research study found that a Mediterranean-like diet, low in saturated fat, was associated with increased levels of physical activity, a higher resting metabolism rate, and less anger and hostility, when compared to a Western-like diet that was rich in saturated fat. These findings add further evidence to the data that I extensively discuss in A Cancer Prevention Guide for the Human Race, showing that a Mediterranean diet low in saturated fat and meat products, and high in unsaturated oils, whole grains, fresh fruit and vegetable, fish, and poultry, is an important strategy for good health.

Excessive Salt Intake Linked to 10% of All Deaths



A new study finds that 1 in 10 deaths in the United States are linked to excessive salt intake.


 

EXCESSIVE SALT INTAKE LINKED TO 10% OF ALL DEATHS

In the United States, and throughout much of the world, salt is liberally used as a seasoning for many types of food. Unfortunately, however, the salt content of most prepared foods (and fast foods and processed foods in particular) far exceeds the daily recommended allowance of 1,500 milligrams (mg) per day, or less than a teaspoon of salt per day, as recommended by the American Heart Association.

Excessive salt intake has been linked to a variety of serious health problems, including congestive heart failure, heart attacks, strokes, and kidney disease. Additionally, as I discuss in detail in my bestselling book, A Cancer Prevention Guide for the Human Race, excessive salt intake also increases the risk of certain types of cancer as well.

At the ongoing annual meeting of the American Heart Association, in New Orleans, newly presented research data strongly suggests that at least 10 percent of all deaths in the United States, and as many as 15 percent of deaths worldwide, are related to excessive salt consumption. The data from this study was collected as part of the 2010 Global Burden of Diseases Study, which was performed by an international collaborative network of researchers from 303 institutions in 50 different countries. In addition to collecting salt intake data from participating research volunteers, the scientists conducting this public health research study also analyzed more than 100 previously published prospective randomized clinical research trials linking specific levels of salt intake with adverse health outcomes.

Based upon data collected in this important new public health study, the researchers calculated that excessive salt intake directly contributes to 1 out of every 10 deaths in the United States (and 1 out of every 7 deaths worldwide). According to the findings of this study, 60 percent of salt-associated deaths occur in men, and 40 percent occur in women; and heart attacks cause 42 percent of salt-associated deaths, while strokes cause 41 percent of salt-associated deaths.

Although humans appear to be biologically programmed to seek out salty foods, the unnaturally high salt content of most prepared and processed foods today means that we are ingesting far greater amounts of salt, on a daily basis, than our bodies require (or were designed to handle). As a consequence of this salty evolution of our “modern” diets, our bodies are at risk of becoming overloaded with salt, and the increased amount of fluid that this salt causes our bodies to retain. The end result, for a shocking percentage of people around the world, based upon the findings of this study, is an increased risk of congestive heart failure, heart attack, stroke and kidney disease, and a significantly increased risk of premature death due to these illnesses. Additionally, as I discuss in A Cancer Prevention Guide for the Human Race, high salt intake has also been clearly linked to an increased risk of several deadly types of cancer in the gastrointestinal tract.

Impact of Gun Control Legislation on Gun Deaths



A new study links gun control laws with a significant decrease in deaths caused by firearms.


 

IMPACT OF GUN CONTROL LEGISLATION ON GUN DEATHS

Each year, more than 30,000 people are killed by firearms in the United States. In 2010 alone, 68 percent of the more than 16,000 murders recorded in the United States were carried out using firearms, while 51 percent of the more than 38,000 suicides were associated with the use of firearms. Recent mass shootings, including those in Colorado, Wisconsin and Connecticut, have further aggravated the ongoing debate by people on both sides of this issue, as new gun control legislation is being considered by Congress.

Amidst the vigorous and ongoing debate regarding gun control legislation, passionate claims are being made by those for and against such legislation. For example, one argument put forth by advocates of minimal (or no) gun control is that placing limitations, of any kind, on gun ownership is not an effective means of reducing deaths caused by firearms. Yet, there is fairly abundant research data available linking the presence of guns in the home with a significant increase in the risk of gun-associated death (compared to homes in which there are no firearms), including both homicides and suicides associated with the use of firearms.

The effectiveness of existing gun control laws has also been heavily debated by opposing camps, with little consensus being arrived at in this area. Now, a newly published public health study adds compelling data linking tighter gun ownership regulations with a lower overall risk of gun-associated deaths, including homicide and suicide. This new study appears in the current issue of the journal JAMA Internal Medicine.

The authors of this study combined a review of firearms-related deaths in each state (using data from the Centers for Disease Control) with a review of existing gun control laws in each state. Following an analysis of this extensive data, the impact of gun control legislation on gun-associated deaths was then assessed for each state. The researchers also attempted to control for other socioeconomic and demographic factors known to be associated with gun-associated deaths, including age, gender, race/ethnicity, poverty, unemployment, level of education, population density, violence-related deaths not associated with firearms, and household firearm ownership.

Over the 4-year duration of this public health study, there were 121,084 gun-associated deaths in the United States. The average incidence of firearm-associated deaths varied significantly between individual states, ranging from a low of 2.9 per 100,000 people in Hawaii to a high of 17.9 per 100,000 people in Louisiana. Strikingly, states with the most stringent gun control laws had a 42 percent lower overall incidence of deaths associated with guns when compared with those states having the least stringent (or no) laws. More specifically, firearm-associated suicides were 37 percent less common in states with more stringent gun control laws, when compared to states with minimal or no gun control laws. Similarly, the incidence of firearm-associated murders was 40 percent lower in states with higher level gun control laws, compared to states with minimal or no firearms laws.

Taken together, the data presented in this landmark public health study significantly linked the presence of gun control laws with a marked decrease in firearms-associated deaths (including both suicides and murders), and the absence of such legislation was associated with a significant increase in gun-associated deaths.

I do not aim to take a “political side” in the ongoing debate regarding gun control legislation in this article. However, the findings of this study, as with prior public health studies, strongly link the presence of gun control legislation, at the individual state level, with a significant decrease in the incidence of gun-associated deaths, including both suicides and murders. Sadly, however, I do not think that studies such as this one, no matter how scientifically valid, will do much to change the tenor of the ongoing debate regarding gun control legislation, particularly since recent mass shootings in the United States, including the shocking murder of 26 elementary school children and their teachers on December 14, 2012 in Connecticut, appear to have done little to bridge the enormous gap between those favoring more rigorous gun control legislation and those who remain opposed to such legislation. That being said, I hope that those responsible for considering and enacting such legislation will pay attention to public health studies such as this one when it comes time for them to cast their votes….

Hold the Bacon: Processed Meats Linked to Early Death



A new study links the consumption of processed meats with a significant risk of early death.


 

HOLD THE BACON: PROCESSED MEATS LINKED TO EARLY DEATH

As I extensively discuss in my bestselling book, A Cancer Prevention Guide for the Human Race, red meat and processed meats (such as bacon, sausages, and luncheon meats) have been directly linked to an increased risk of multiple different types of cancer, including cancers of the breast, prostate, esophagus, stomach, pancreas, kidney, bladder, colon, and rectum. Moreover, diets rich in these meat products are also associated with a higher risk of that other great killer of mankind, cardiovascular disease.  Now, a newly published public health study puts the impact of a meat-rich diet into stark perspective. This important new clinical study appears in the current issue of the journal BMC Medicine.

Nearly 450,000 men and women between the ages of 35 and 69 have participated in a huge ongoing prospective public health study, the European Prospective Investigation into Cancer and Nutrition (EPIC), making this one of the largest prospective clinical research studies ever undertaken. All of these study volunteers were without clinical evidence of cancer, stroke, or cardiovascular disease at the time they entered into this clinical study. At the time when data from the EPIC study was collected for this analysis, after almost 13 years of follow-up on average, 26,344 study volunteers had died since enrolling in the study.

Following extensive statistical analysis of the huge amount of data collected in this study, the increased consumption of processed meats was linked to a 44 percent increase in the risk of death from all causes, including cardiovascular (heart) disease and cancer. Red meat was also associated with an increase in the risk of death due to all causes, although not to the same extent as was observed with processed meats. (As with multiple previous studies, this study also found no association between the consumption of poultry and an increase in the risk of death from any cause.)

Based upon their analysis of the data, the researchers who conducted this gigantic public health study concluded that more than 3 percent of the deaths observed in this study could have been prevented if all study volunteers had decreased their processed meat intake to less than 20 grams (0.7 ounces) per day.

Statin Drugs May Reduce the Risk of Death Due to Cancer





 

A new study suggests that cholesterol lowering statin drugs may reduce the risk of dying of cancer.


 

 

STATIN DRUGS MAY REDUCE THE RISK OF DEATH DUE TO CANCER

As I discuss in my bestselling book, A Cancer Prevention Guide for the Human Race, cholesterol-reducing statin drugs can significantly reduce the risk of death due to cardiovascular disease in people with high cholesterol levels, and may also reduce the risk of cancer-related death.  However, the potential role of statins in preventing cancer, and cancer-associated death, remains unclear at this time, as much of the research evidence in this area, to date, has been contradictory.  At the same time, some of the known biological actions of statin drugs could conceivably play a role in reducing the risk of cancer, and reducing death rates due to cancer, through their anti-inflammatory and cholesterol reducing effects.

Now, a newly published Danish public health study, which appears in the current issue of the prestigious New England Journal of Medicine, strongly suggests that the use of statin drugs may significantly decrease the risk of death due to cancer.  In this study, the medical records of all Danish citizens diagnosed with cancer between 1995 and 2007 were reviewed.  Altogether, clinical data was available for a whopping 295,025 patients diagnosed with cancer over this 12-year period.

When the authors of this study looked at death rates due to all causes, the use of varying daily doses of statin drugs reduced the risk of death from any cause by 13 to 18 percent, when compared to death rates among patients who did not take statins.  At the same time, varying daily statin doses were also observed to reduce cancer-associated death rates by 13 to 17 percent, when compared to patients who did not take statin drugs.

In summary, the findings of this enormous public health study suggest that statin drugs may significantly decrease not only the risk of death from cardiovascular disease, but also the risk of dying from cancer as well.  Fortunately, there are more than a dozen randomized prospective clinical research trials underway at this time that are evaluating the appropriate role of statin drugs in the management of multiple types of cancer.

Chronic Anxiety and Depression Significantly Increase the Risk of Early Death




 

A large new study suggests that chronic anxiety and depression are associated with a higher risk of premature death than was previously appreciated.


 

 

CHRONIC ANXIETY AND DEPRESSION SIGNIFICANTLY INCREASE THE RISK OF EARLY DEATH

As I discuss in my bestselling book, A Cancer Prevention Guide for the Human Race, most previous research studies have suggested only rather weak links between chronic stress and cancer risk, although there is some data linking chronic depression with breast cancer risk.  However, in view of the increasing number of people around the world who are currently experiencing chronic anxiety and depression during these economically and geopolitically troubled times, the findings of a new public health study that psychological distress significantly increases the risk of premature death from serious illnesses, including cancer, is concerning.  This new study appears in the current issue of the British Medical Journal.

Altogether, 68,222 adults in Great Britain were followed for an average of more than 8 years within the prospectively conducted Health Survey for England study.  All of these study participants were clinically free of serious physical illness when they first joined this very large public health study.  All of the participants in this study were assessed for psychological stress using a validated assessment questionnaire, which was administered in their homes by research staff.  Subsequently, the incidence of serious physical illnesses during the course of this study was then correlated with the degree of measured psychological distress.  The rather dramatic findings of this large prospective public health study illustrate the magnitude of the impact of chronic, severe stress on our bodies, including the risk of premature death due to stress-associated physical illnesses.

After adjusting for preexisting serious physical illnesses, lifestyle-associated risk factors for serious illnesses, and socioeconomic factors known to be linked to chronic, serious illnesses, this study still identified a highly significant increase in the risk of premature death associated with the extent of psychological distress among volunteers in this very large study.  When the “psychological distress score” was compared with death rates, having a score of 1 to 3 (compared to a score of “0,” which reflects no evidence of psychological distress) was associated with a 20 percent increase in the risk of premature death.  A psychological stress score of 4 to 6 was associated with a 43 percent increase in the risk of early death, while a distress score of 7 to 12 was associated with a whopping 94 percent increase in the risk of premature death when compared to study volunteers who were without evidence of any significant psychological distress!

Upon further analysis, death due to cardiovascular disease and other non-cancer causes increased significantly, and proportionally, with each increase in the psychological distress score.  Cancer-associated deaths also increased with rising psychological distress scores, although this association was only observed among volunteers with significantly elevated distress scores.  However, for non-cancer causes of death, the risk of premature death was significantly elevated with evenmild increases in psychological distress.

The potential impact of this study’s findings are highly significant, as they not only reveal a “dose-dependent” relationship between stress levels and the risk of premature death from serious physical illnesses, but the sheer magnitude of the impact of high levels of chronic anxiety and depression on the risk of premature death is much higher, potentially, than has been observed in previous and much smaller studies.

Although this study was not designed to identify the biological mechanisms whereby prolonged periods of increased psychological distress lead to early death, numerous prior studies have shown that chronic depression and anxiety can directly activate an inflammatory response in humans which, in turn, is known to increase the risk of cardiovascular disease, infection, and cancer, as well as other chronic, serious illnesses.  It is also well known that chronic anxiety and chronic depression increase the likelihood of unhealthy behaviors that have also been linked to serious, chronic illnesses, including smoking, excess alcohol or other drug intake, unhealthy diets, and lack of exercise, in addition to other unhealthy behaviors.  What is especially unique about this new study (other than its sheer size), however, is that the researchers were able to identify and adjust for preexisting unhealthy behaviors among the study’s volunteers when they analyzed the study’s data, which increases the likelihood that the adverse effects of chronic anxiety and depression on the risk of premature death observed in this research study are actually a direct result of psychological distress rather than unhealthy lifestyle choices.

If you are experiencing high levels of chronic stress, and if you are frequently anxious or depressed, then please seek help from your personal physician or a mental health professional.  If you are thinking of harming yourself, or someone else, then please seek immediate help.  These are very trying times for many people, and the ongoing worldwide challenges that have provoked such high levels of stress do not appear likely to disappear any time soon.  Knowing that so many other people around the world are also feeling worried and chronically stressed can make each of us feel less alone in our distress.  However, sometimes the awareness that others are experiencing similar levels of distress is, by itself, not enough to ease our anxiety or depression.  So, if you are struggling with anxiety or depression, and especially if you are feeling alone and isolated at the same time, then please seek the help and support of others.  In the vast majority of cases, feelings of hopelessness or helplessness will eventually pass when you get help and support during dark times in your life.
