Why We Eat Far More Calories than We Think



A new study shows that we greatly underestimate how many calories we consume.


 

WHY WE EAT FAR MORE CALORIES THAN WE THINK

As I discuss in my bestselling book, A Cancer Prevention Guide for the Human Race, it is critically important to avoid diets and foods, and other lifestyle choices, known to increase the risk of cancer.  As I also discuss in my book, the human body was not designed for the supra-normal calorie content of the typical “western diet.”  The enormous number of calories packed into the highly processed foods that most people favor, when combined with our increasingly sedentary lifestyle, has led to an epidemic of obesity and obesity-related diseases, including cancer, diabetes, high blood pressure, heart disease, stroke, gallstones, liver disease, and accelerated arthritis, among other preventable serious illnesses.  Another point that I make in my book, and in discussions with my patients, is that almost all of us greatly underestimate the number of calories that we are consuming while, at the same time, we tend to overestimate the number of calories that we are burning through physical activity.

A newly published public health study, which appears in the current issue of the British Medical Journal, provides compelling data regarding our predisposition towards underestimating just how many calories we consume on a daily basis.

In this study, 1,877 adults, 1,178 adolescents, and 330 school-age children were asked to estimate the approximate number of calories that they were consuming while eating at fast food restaurants.  Specifically, these surveys were performed at McDonalds, Burger King, Subway, Wendy’s, KFC, and Dunkin’ Donuts.

The actual calories count, on average, for each meal was 836 calories for adults, 756 calories for adolescents, and 733 calories for children.  When asked to estimate the numbers of the calories they had just consumed, the adults underestimated their caloric intake by an average of 175 calories, the adolescents by 259 calories, and the school-age children by 175 calories.  Perhaps more important was the observation that the degree of underestimation of calorie content of fast-food meals actually increased with increasing actual meal calorie counts.  That is to say, the more excessive calories that people consumed at these fast-food restaurants, the more they underestimated their actual caloric intake.  Another interesting finding of this public health study was that adults and teens who ate at Subway underestimated the calorie counts of their meals to a greater degree (20 and 25 percent, respectively) than people who ate at McDonald’s, suggesting an inaccurate perception that Subway meals contained fewer calories (and were, therefore, healthier) than McDonalds meals.

Mediterranean Diet Reduces the Symptoms of Menopause



A new study finds that following the Mediterranean diet significantly reduces the hot flashes and night sweats of menopause.


 

MEDITERRANEAN DIET REDUCES THE SYMPTOMS OF MENOPAUSE

I have written extensively about the Mediterranean diet, and the lower risk of cancer and heart disease associated with this diet. In general, a Mediterranean diet is rich in fresh fruits and vegetables, whole grains, fish, and poultry.  The use of unsaturated cooking oils, like olive oil and canola oil, and the avoidance of saturated fats, are also hallmarks of a Mediterranean diet, as is the decreased intake of red meat, processed meats, and dairy products.

Now, a newly published prospective clinical research study suggests that adhering to a Mediterranean diet may also significantly decrease hot flashes and night sweats in women who have gone through menopause. This new study appears in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition.

The Australian Longitudinal Study included 6,040 women who had gone through menopause, and this very large group of study volunteers was then followed every 3 years, for a total of 9 years. Based upon extensive analysis of the diets and menopausal symptoms of these research volunteers, the researchers found that the volunteers who most consistently adhered to a Mediterranean diet were 20 percent less likely to have hot flashes and night sweats when compared to the women who did not follow a Mediterranean-type diet. Similarly, the women who regularly consumed the largest amount of fruit in their diet were 19 percent less likely to experience menopausal symptoms, when compared to the volunteers who consumed the least amount of fruit. Moreover, the women who consumed the highest amount of fat and sugar in their diet were 23 percent more likely to experience hot flashes and night sweats when compared to the volunteers who consumed the least amount of fat and sugar.

The findings of this interesting study offer women who are struggling with post-menopausal hot flashes and night sweats a natural (and healthy) alternative to the medications that are currently prescribed for the relief of these symptoms (and which are, unfortunately, not highly effective). At the same time, switching to a Mediterranean diet to help manage your symptoms of menopause will also help to lower your risk of developing both cancer and cardiovascular disease! Mediterranean Diet Reduces Cardiovascular Disease Risk



A new clinical research study shows that a Mediterranean diet significantly reduces cardiovascular disease risk.


 

MEDITERRANEAN DIET REDUCES CARDIOVASCULAR DISEASE RISK

As I have discussed in my bestselling book, A Cancer Prevention Guide for the Human Race, a Mediterranean diet appears to significantly reduce the risk of certain types of cancer, and cancers of the gastrointestinal tract in particular. In general, a Mediterranean diet is rich in fresh fruits and vegetables, whole grains, fish, and poultry. The use of unsaturated cooking oils, like olive oil and canola oil, and the avoidance of saturated fats, are also hallmarks of a Mediterranean diet, as is the decreased intake of red meat, processed meats, and dairy products. A Mediterranean diet has also been viewed by many experts as a heart-healthy diet, although most of the studies that have looked at the effects of a Mediterranean diet on cardiovascular disease risk have relied upon dietary surveys to collect data, which is a less rigorous method of doing research when compared to prospective randomized clinical research trials. However, a newly published prospective randomized clinical trial now provides the high level research data needed to properly assess the impact of a Mediterranean diet on cardiovascular disease risk. This important new clinical study appears in the current issue of the New England Journal of Medicine.

In this study, 7,477 research volunteers were randomized into one of three different study groups. The first group consumed a Mediterranean diet that was supplemented with extra-virgin olive oil. The second group consumed a Mediterranean diet supplemented with tree nuts. The third group, which served as the control group, was given advice on how to adhere to a low-fat diet, but the diets of the volunteers in this control group were not modified or controlled by the study’s researchers. Research dieticians closely followed the food intake of the volunteers in this study, and they worked intensively with the volunteers assigned to the two Mediterranean diet groups to modify the diets of these volunteers. All male study volunteers were between the ages of 55 and 80 years, while the female volunteers ranged in age from 60 to 80 years. None of the study volunteers had cardiovascular disease, including coronary artery disease, when they entered into this clinical trial, although they all had one or more risk factors for cardiovascular disease, including diabetes or at least three of the following risk factors: smoking, high blood pressure, increased LDL cholesterol levels, overweight or obesity, or a family history of early-onset coronary artery disease.

After an average of almost 5 years of follow-up, the impact of a Mediterranean diet on these research volunteers was highly significant. Both groups of volunteers who adhered to a Mediterranean diet in this study experienced a significant reduction in cardiovascular events, including heart attack, stroke, or death from any cardiovascular cause (when compared to the control group). Indeed, both the group that adhered to the olive-oil-supplemented Mediterranean diet and the group that was placed on the nut-supplemented Mediterranean diet experienced 30 percent fewer cardiovascular events when compared to the control group that did not adhere to a Mediterranean diet!

In summary, among a group of middle aged and elderly men and women with one or more risk factors for cardiovascular disease, a Mediterranean diet supplemented with olive oil or tree nuts significantly reduced the risk of heart attack, stroke, and death due to these or any other cardiovascular causes.

A new study finds that saturated fat decreases metabolism and physical activity, and increases anger and hostility.


 

HIGH FAT DIET DECREASES METABOLISM AND INCREASES ANGER AND HOSTILITY

As I have written about extensively in my bestselling book, A Cancer Prevention Guide for the Human Race, a diet low in saturated fat and meat products, such as the Mediterranean diet, has been linked to a decreased risk of cancer (and cardiovascular disease) when compared to the traditional Western diet, which is rich in saturated fat and meat. Now, a new study has linked a Mediterranean-type diet, low in saturated fat, to other potential health benefits, including greater levels of physical activity, a higher metabolic rate, and, somewhat surprisingly, less angry and hostile moods. This study appears in the current issue of the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition.

In this prospective randomized clinical study, 32 young adults were separated into two groups. The first group used cooking oils high in saturated fat, while the second group used cooking oils low in saturated fat and high in monounsaturated fat. After three weeks, both groups were “crossed over,” and had their cooking oils switched for an additional three weeks. (This clinical study’s “crossover” design is a powerful means of eliminating potential biases that can lead to false conclusions.) Another important aspect of this study was that all food consumed by the study’s volunteer research subjects was provided (and controlled) by the researchers. Moreover, the food provided to both groups of study volunteers was the same, and only the cooking oil differed between the two study groups.

All research volunteers were continuously assessed with regards to physical activity levels and resting metabolic rates (“resting energy expenditure”). Due to the observed differences in physical activity levels between the two groups of volunteers, the researchers also subjected study volunteers to a validated mood assessment questionnaire, to see if differences in mood might account for the significantly different levels of physical activity between the two groups of research volunteers.

The results of this intriguing prospective randomized clinical study were quite interesting. Firstly, continuous measurements of physical activity showed that the monounsaturated oil (Mediterranean-like diet) group was 12 percent more active, physically, than the saturated fat group (Western-type diet). Secondly, the resting metabolic rate of the monounsaturated oil group was almost 5 percent higher than that of the saturated fat cooking oil group, suggesting that the young adults who were consuming primarily monounsaturated fat were burning more calories at rest than the group that was using saturated fat. Finally, the monounsaturated fat group scored significantly lower on the anger-hostility scale of the mood assessment questionnaire than the volunteers who were using cooking oil containing saturated fat.

To summarize, this innovative prospective clinical research study found that a Mediterranean-like diet, low in saturated fat, was associated with increased levels of physical activity, a higher resting metabolism rate, and less anger and hostility, when compared to a Western-like diet that was rich in saturated fat. These findings add further evidence to the data that I extensively discuss in A Cancer Prevention Guide for the Human Race, showing that a Mediterranean diet low in saturated fat and meat products, and high in unsaturated oils, whole grains, fresh fruit and vegetable, fish, and poultry, is an important strategy for good health.

Fast Food, Diabetes, Heart Disease and Death






 

 

A new study attaches some shocking numbers to the risk of diabetes, heart disease and death caused by fast food.


 

 

FAST FOOD, DIABETES, HEART DISEASE AND DEATH

The United States has long been a prolific exporter of products that reflect our unique culture.  American movies, books, music, musical instruments, iPhones, iPads, automobiles, motorcycles… and fast food can all be found in all but the remotest places on the planet.  While, arguably, some these quintessentially American exports are more prized than others by global consumers, American-style fast food has become utterly ubiquitous throughout the world.

By now, almost everyone knows that deep-fried fast food is not a healthy eating choice.  Now, a newly published public health study sheds some important light on just how unhealthy American-style fast food really is.  This new clinical study appears in the current issue of the journal Circulation.

Between 1993 and 1998, more than 50,000 ethnically Chinese men and women in Singapore participated in the Singapore Chinese Health Study.  These men and women ranged in age from 45 to 74 years.  The health outcomes of these research volunteers were then followed until the end of 2009.

All of the Singaporean Chinese participants in this clinical study were thoroughly assessed with respect to their lifestyle and dietary habits.  For the purposes of this public health study, these volunteers were separated into two groups.  The first group consisted of men and women who ate a traditional low-fat Chinese-style diet.  The second group of study volunteers ate American-style fast food meals at least two times per week.  The health outcomes of these two groups of Singaporean Chinese adults were then prospectively monitored, and, ultimately, with rather dramatic findings.

When compared to the men and women who never ate fast food, the volunteers who regularly consumed fast food meals had a 27 percent higher incidence of adult-onset diabetes (type 2 diabetes mellitus).  Even more disturbing, these Singaporean Chinese fast food lovers experienced a 56 percent increase in the risk of death due to heart disease!  Moreover, these worrisome outcomes remained consistent even after adjusting for differences in overall calorie intake and body weight.  While there may or may not be genetic differences in the way that ethnic Chinese adults respond to high levels of fatty and fried foods when compared to Westerners, the links between fast food, on the one hand, and diabetes and cardiovascular disease, on the other hand, are well established in both western and eastern populations around the world.  Therefore, the findings of this innovative public health study should give all of us pause before we pull into the drive-in window of our favorite fast food restaurant!

Frying With Olive Oil Does Not Increase Cardiovascular Disease Risk

New research from Spain shows that frying foods in olive oil and sunflower oil does not increase cardiovascular disease risk.


 

 

 

FRYING WITH OLIVE OIL DOES NOT INCREASE CARDIOVASCULAR DISEASE RISK

As I mention in my recent bestselling book, A Cancer Prevention Guide for the Human Race, many of the very same lifestyle and dietary habits that increase our risk of developing cancer also increase our risk of developing cardiovascular disease, including coronary artery disease, heart attacks (myocardial infarction), peripheral vascular disease, and stroke.  Likewise, adopting an evidence-based cancer prevention lifestyle can not only cut your cancer risk in half, but can also significantly reduce your risk of developing life-threatening cardiovascular disease as well.  For example, one evidence-based strategy that has been shown to reduce both the risk of cancer and cardiovascular disease, and which I extensively discuss in A Cancer Prevention Guide for the Human Race, is following a Mediterranean diet.  Among other features, a Mediterranean diet includes the sparing use of unsaturated cooking oils, including olive oil and sunflower oil, instead of the artery-clogging saturated fats favored as cooking oils in the United States and other western countries.

There are multiple prior research studies that have linked the consumption of foods fried in saturated fats (which are still used in most fried fast foods in the United States) with cardiovascular disease and premature death due to cardiovascular disease.  However, a newly published public health study from Spain, which appears in the current issue of the British Medical Journal, reveals that eating foods fried in olive oil and sunflower oil, which are unsaturated cooking oils, does not appear to increase the risk of developing cardiovascular disease.  This large prospective health study has followed 40,757 Spanish adult volunteers for an average of 11 years, and all of these research volunteers were free from cardiovascular disease at the beginning of this study.

When comparing study volunteers who ate the most fried foods with those who ate the least fried foods, this important research study found no difference in the incidence of death due to cardiovascular disease or, indeed, in the incidence of premature death due to any other causes including cancer.  The differences in cardiovascular disease incidence and premature death found in this Spanish study and those found in similar studies conducted in the United States appear to be due to the different types of cooking oils used to fry foods in Spain (and other Mediterranean countries) and the United States.  Namely, as I have already mentioned, we Americans still favor the use of saturated cooking fats in many of our fried foods, whereas unsaturated fats are favored in Spain and other Mediterranean countries.

The findings of this large Spanish study, which is part of the ongoing enormous prospective European Prospective Investigation into Cancer and Nutrition (EPIC) study, add weight to the similar previous studies that I discuss in A Cancer Prevention Guide for the Human Race.  This new study adds additional evidence to previous observations that a Mediterranean diet can indeed lead to a significant reduction in both cancer risk and cardiovascular disease risk.  In our home, we exclusively use olive oil and canola oil, and in small amounts, to fry our food.  Based upon the findings of this important new study, I recommend the same for you and your family.  (Remember, though, that eating large amounts of deep-fried food, even with the use of unsaturated cooking oils, can lead to significant weight gain due to the high caloric content of fried foods!)

Saturated Fat, Trans-Fats, and Premature Death in Breast Cancer Survivors

SATURATED FAT, TRANS-FATS, AND

PREMATURE DEATH IN BREAST CANCER SURVIVORS

As I discuss in detail in my new book, “A Cancer Prevention Guide for the Human Race,” obesity and increased dietary fat intake have both been linked to an increased risk of developing breast cancer and other types of cancer.  Moreover, obesity and lack of exercise have also been clearly associated with an increased risk of recurrent breast cancer, and death due to breast cancer, among women who have previously been diagnosed with this common form of cancer.  However, the impact of diet, alone, on the risk of premature death among women previously diagnosed with breast cancer, has not been well studied.

However, a newly published clinical research study, which appears in the current issue of the journal Breast Cancer Research & Treatment, strongly suggests that unhealthy dietary habits may significantly increase the risk of death in women who have previously been diagnosed with breast cancer.

In this prospectively conducted study, 4,441 women who were diagnosed with breast cancer between 1987 and 1999 were followed for an average of 7 years, and were evaluated using a previously validated 126-item food frequency questionnaire that was administered immediately following the diagnosis of breast cancer.  The clinical outcomes of these 4,441 women were then adjusted for other known risk factors for breast cancer recurrence, including age at breast cancer diagnosis, menopausal status, smoking history, stage of breast cancer at diagnosis, alcohol intake history, prior use of hormone replacement therapy, obesity, and exercise history.  After these other known breast cancer recurrence factors were adjusted for, the impact of diet on death due to breast cancer recurrence, as well as death due to any cause, was then calculated.

When compared to women with the lowest average dietary intake of saturated fat, breast cancer survivors with the highest levels of intake of these unhealthy fats were 41 percent more likely to die from any cause during the course of this study.  Similarly, a high level of trans-fat intake was associated with a whopping 78 percent increase in the risk of death from any cause.  (While it failed to reach statistical significance in this relatively small prospective clinical study, an increased risk of death due to breast cancer recurrence was also associated with increasing levels of saturated fat and trans-fat intake, as well.)

 

In summary, this study of more than 4,000 breast cancer survivors revealed a striking increase in the risk of premature death among women who consumed large amounts of saturated fat and trans-fats in their diet.  Importantly, this increased risk of premature death was not limited to death caused by breast cancer recurrence, alone, but from multiple different causes of death.  Regarding the link between the intake of unhealthy fats and death due specifically to breast cancer recurrence, the same disturbing trend was observed, although this particular association did not quite reach accepted standards of statistical significance.  (A larger version of this study will, therefore, be necessary to tease out the relationship between unhealthy dietary fats and death due to breast cancer recurrence, specifically; although the findings of this relatively small prospective clinical study are suggestive that such a link likely exists.)
